Solution Architecture is a critical role in any organisation. It requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking and strong communication skills to be able to act as the bridge between business and technical teams.  

I have seen highly qualified candidates often stumble during the application and interview process, missing out on opportunities - not because of a lack of skills, but due to avoidable mistakes. Here are some of the most common pitfalls I’ve observed and how you can avoid them.

1. Underestimating the Importance of a Tailored Resume

Mistake: Submitting a generic CV that doesn't highlight relevant skills and experiences.  

Solution: Your CV should be a tailored narrative of your professional journey. Emphasise your experience with specific technologies, methodologies and projects that align with the job description. Use keywords from the job description and quantify your individual contributions and achievements where possible.

2. Neglecting Soft Skills

Mistake: Focusing solely on technical skills and neglecting soft skills.

Using the STAR method can help resolve this (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Practice articulating how you've handled challenges, worked in a team, or led on a project.

Mistake: Not researching the company thoroughly before the interview.  

Solution: Understand the company’s products, services, market position and culture. Be prepared to discuss how your skills and experiences align with the company's needs and how you can add value. Tailor your questions to show that you’ve done your research and are genuinely interested in the role.

5. Overlooking the Importance of Communication Skills

Mistake: Failing to clearly articulate your thoughts and solutions.  

Solution: Practice explaining complex technical concepts in simple terms. Solution Architects often need to bridge the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders. Your ability to communicate effectively can set you apart from other candidates.

6. Ignoring the Role of Continuous Learning

Mistake: Not demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.  

Solution: The technology industry is constantly evolving. Show your dedication to staying current by discussing recent certifications, courses, or conferences you’ve attended. Employers value candidates who are proactive about their professional growth.

7. Failing to Provide Context for Technical Decisions

Mistake: Describing technical solutions without explaining the context or business impact.  

Solution: When discussing your projects, provide context for why certain technical decisions were made. Explain the problem, the options considered, the solution chosen and the impact it had on the business. This demonstrates strategic thinking and a business-oriented mindset.

8. Being Unprepared for Technical Assessments

Mistake: Underestimating technical assessments/ tests.  

Solution: Practice coding problems, system design questions and review relevant technical concepts beforehand. Familiarise yourself with the tools and languages mentioned in the job description. A solid performance on the technical assessment can significantly boost your chances.

9. Overlooking Cultural Fit

Mistake: Focusing solely on technical fit and neglecting cultural fit.  

Solution: Companies are not just looking for someone who can do the job but also someone who will thrive in their environment. Show that your values and working style align with the company’s culture. Discuss how you’ve succeeded in similar environments in the past.
